Galvanic Cells In this illustration, a copper rod (called an electrode) is immersed in a solution of copper (II) sulfate (called an electrolyte) and connect by a wire to a zinc rod immersed in a solution of zinc sulfate. Looking at the table above we can see that copper is the stronger oxidizing agent (it is higher on the list) therefore, the copper will be reduced (gain electrons) and the zinc will be oxidized (lose electrons).
